Drug Testing In Public Schools essays John is a well known person around school. All of his life he has had a love for football. Every year he would join the school football team and help the team through a number of victories. Somewhere along the road, John started to hang out with some bad people. These people brought John into their world of drinking, drugs, and other terrible things. John still plays his extra-curricular activities while getting high off such drugs as marijuana and ecstasy. John then is asked to have a drug test in order to stay on the team. He failed it. John was kicked off the team. He was expelled from school. He lost everything he once had. Such incidents like that have been happening all the time. Isnt it a right of ours to have privacy? Wasnt there an amendment to make sure no anonymous searches and seizures take place? When it comes down to such questions, both sides have a different view. Students feel that their privacy is being violated. So far the Supreme Court has not issued that it is unconstitutional or not if a random drug testing for any student occurs. Still, random people throughout extra-curricular activities are allowed to be drug tested. Several students have spoke out saying that they feel that this is taking away their rights as a citizen. Doing drugs is wrong, but doesnt a person have the right to hide the fact that he/she does them? Due to allegations like this, some students have been getting suspended and/or expelled from school after failing the test. When it comes down to the government, they believe that actions like this should not happen. The drug testing was meant to help those that have failed the test. The government urges schools not to suspend or expel the student, but help the student through counseling. This papers topic is on Sight and Blindness in the play Oedipus Rex - Essay Example In light of this, it can be said that being sighted or blind does not necessarily correspond with the ability to control ones fate. It may be assumed that having the ability to see makes it easier to control fate, however, in Oedipus Rex, it is clearly evident that between physical and intellectual blindness, it is the latter which seems to allow for a more truthful vision of one’s destiny. Oedipus, the protagonist, is arrogant and intellectually blind. It is this arrogance and blindness which actually cause him to eventually fulfill the fate he so desperately tries to escape from. He begins his life with a prophecy from the gods; that one day he will kill his father and marry his mother. In a desperate attempt to avoid this terrible fate, his parents send him into the mountains to die. However, a shepherd saves Oedipus and the child is adopted by Polybus and Merope, the King and Queen of Corinth. While Oedipus was completely unaware of the prophecy during this time, he was safe from fulfilling his terrible destiny. Ironically, it is only when he begins to see the truth that he begins to approach his fate. As he becomes aware of the prophecy, he flees from home for safety in the hopes of avoiding his destiny. However, in doing so, he achieves the opposite; while fleeing Corinth, he meets his real father, King Laius, and kills him. He then makes his way to Thebes where he marries his real mother, Jocasta, and also brings a plague into the city. These events are hugely ironic, because if Oedipus had never become aware of the truth, he could have stayed blissfully ignorant, and safe from fulfilling his destiny. Alternatively, if Oedipus had been aware of the full truth from the beginning he could have potentially avoided his fate. Welfare Reform: Drug Testing for Government Assistance Essay example --

Drug testing should be mandatory in all states for those receiving or applying for government assistance, such as TANF (Transitional Assistance to Needy Families), SNAP, Unemployment Benefits and even those receiving Pell Grants to continue their education; or should it? This is a question everyone has an opinion on from the politicians to the general public. I will attempt to show arguments against and for the program of drug testing that has already been adopted in some states, such as Florida (Tarren Bragdon, Foundation for Government Accountability), Arizona and Missouri (Aileen, Suitcase Clinic). Welfare is defined as: of, relating to, or concerned with welfare and especially with improvement of disadvantaged social groups (Merriam-Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary, Eleventh Edition, pg. 1420). And Reform is defined as: 1a: to put or change into an improved form or condition. 1b: to amend or improve by change of form or removal of faults and abuses. (pg. 1046). There seems to an argument on the cost of drug testing the states will bear if drug testing is required. â€Å"The cost is not only to the individual in question but also the federal/state/local government.† (Calliope Hollingue). There is a $26.78 average cost per drug test according to a chart from The Foundation of Government Accountability. The chart also shows the state of Florida reimbursed $58,000 worth of fees for negative results in the 1st (July-September) of 2011 (Tarren Bragdon). The chart will be shown at the end of the report as it has information regarding the effects of such testing both against and in favor of. Another opinion for this view is that though it may save the state welfare dollars, it will increase sate and local expenditure in the criminal ju... ...ty. Dear Ms. Cornell, On the last day of my 9th grade English class, I gathered my books, took one last look around, and wondered if you and I would ever cross paths again. As you erased the chalk board, I wondered how many students were actually as inspired by you as I was. I considered interrupting your meticulous erasing, but decided against it, coming to the conclusion that you had had enough of us rowdy 9th graders for one school year. Your English class was my favorite, and I always looked forward to the exciting activities you’d come up with for us to participate in. Going into the 9th grade, I didn’t think that group activities and reading those â€Å"long† short stories would be something that I actually looked forward to, but you changed my outlook completely. I never thought I would have the opportunity to contact you again as I ventured off to high school to pursue the final years of structured schooling. It’s funny, though†¦as I walked out of your class room, you stayed with me through the duration of my schooling. The way that you taught inspired me in ways that no other teacher could. Your exclusive focus on each individual student you encountered helped me to understand that everyone is, indeed, individual. The creativity you incorporated into each lesson plan helped me to see that nothing has to be boring†¦it’s all in the way that a person approaches it. What is social problem? â€Å"A social problem is a condition that at least some people in a community view as being undesirable† (What is a social problem?, n. d). It is difficult to define social problem accurately or comprehensively because of the various dimensions associated with it. Murder, violence, theft etc are accepted by everybody as soci al problems. However, teenagers who play loud music in a public places may not view it as a problem, even if it causes disturbances to the public. Smoking is also a personal matter; but if it performed in a public place, it can cause immense damages to the health of the people around the smoker. Same way, drug and alcohol abuses are personal matters; but these things can lead the abuser towards antisocial activities. ... Anti-social behaviour doesn't just make life unpleasant. It holds back the regeneration of disadvantaged areas and creates an environment where more serious crime can take hold (What is ASB? n. d.) Man is a social animal and hence it is difficult for him to lead an isolated life. Since we are living in a society, it is necessary for us to satisfy the needs of the society along with satisfying our own needs. At the same time, individual needs should never cause any problems to others in the society. In other words, an individual need become a socially accepted need only if it does not cause any physical or psychological problems to others. For example, sex is a biological or psychological need for all the living things. Sexual engagements are socially accepted, only when both the parties did perform it based on mutual consent. However, rape cannot be justified under any circumstances because of the absence of mutual consent in such cases. Moreover, sexual activities of minors are unac ceptable to the society even if it performed with mutual consent. In short, same activity can become a socially accepted or rejected one based on the circumstances or the nature of the activity. Alcoholism and drug abuse are some other major antisocial activity undertaken by youths. These things are considered as personal matters by many of the youths. However they are forgetting the fact that alcoholism or drug addiction may result in severe mental, physical and social problems which may affect others as well.
